The Bay of Pasaia

bahia_pasaia

Jaizkibia's scope of operations runs from Alto de Miracruz in the capital of Gipuzkoa (Donostia-San Sebastian) to the Bay of Txingudi. The northern limit is the Cantabrian Sea on the Bay of Biscay and to the south, Peñas de Aia, a spur range in the foothills of the Pyrenees located in Oiartzun. This area affects a total of seven municipalities: Donostia-San Sebastián, Pasaia, Errenteria, Lezo, Oiartzun, Hondarribia and Irun.

In this part of Gipuzkoa the Pasajes Bay area is of special interest owing to its natural conditions, its current state and the potential for environmental, social, economic and urban transformation and regeneration.

Four waterside communities are located on the Bay of Pasaia: Donostia-San Sebastián (the neighbourhoods of Bidebieta, Herrera and Larratxo-Altza), Pasaia, Errenteria and Lezo. Of all of these municipalities, Pasaia is the most important in terms of the bay although they are all part of a continuous and consolidated urban region, the Metropolitan Area of the capital of Gipuzkoa.

This is a continuous urban region with concentrated industrial activity, large-scale infrastructures and degraded urban areas.

In this framework, there are different areas of activity which must be handled with great utmost coherency in light of the bay's overall degradation. Therefore, some of the spheres included are: La Herrera, Frente de Antxo, Euskadi etorbidea, Lonja de Pescado, Ondartxo, Bordalaborda, Frente de Lezo, etc.

Within these areas of activity, La Herrera is considered a sphere of particular relevance, an industrial area which today encompasses 11 hectares and offers major possibilities for transformation; this area could be converted into a new and attractive urban centre with the ensuing improvements in terms of quality of life for the population.
